After pulling his truck up behind Janny’s car, Echo immediately spotted the pair waiting for him on a wide manicured lawn. He had parked on the opposite side of the busy street and had to wait for several cars to pass before he could cross.

Why does it feel as though I’m coming home to someone?

Janny waved and called out, “We decided to wait for you out here.”

He grinned like a schoolboy. The woman was definitely happy to see him and her pup was dancing and flipping on the end of her lead.

Until she wasn’t. It happened so fast, the collar must have snapped because the next instant Roxy was flying in his direction, free of any restraint.

Unfortunately, a big yellow tabby appeared from nowhere and took that opportunity to streak down the sidewalk and Roxy went berserk. She bolted after the cat, following when it headed into the street, diagonally away from his truck.

“Oh God! Roxy!” Janny dropped the useless lead to charge after her pet.

Echo shouted. “Stay right there, I’ve got her!” Then he did what he hadn’t done in months. He ran. At full speed, dodging one, two cars, trying to reach the pug before she got flattened.

The dog was fast, but he was determined. Also, she stopped running and crouched in terror in the middle of the road when she realized just how desperate her location had become.

The stupid cat was long gone.

Echo was able to snatch her up, not even breaking stride as he tucked her into his chest like an oversized football, barely avoiding a collision with a blue sedan.

When he finally came to a stop, they were still on the wrong side. He could see Janny waiting across the street, tears streaming down her pretty face and her hands fisted at her sides.

Echo whispered to the trembling dog. “You mutt, are in deep trouble. The lady looks pissed, but don’t worry, we’re friends now, so I’ve got this.”

Reassured by his voice, Roxy could barely contain her enthusiasm. She began licking his face and hands and when he finally was able to cross over, Janny launched herself at him in a hero’s welcome.

“Thank you, thank you!”

Wrapping one arm around the woman, Echo made it all the way onto the edge of the grass before his knee buckled. Not good. With the dog tucked into his chest and Janny under one arm, he rotated to drop down onto his butt.

“Oh my God, are you ok?”

“I need a minute. Okay–yes.” My knee not so much. “Here, take Roxy.” Gently pushing the wriggling dog towards Janny, he concentrated on not grimacing while he stretched both legs out into the grass.

“You’re hurt.” Now her eyes were dripping again.

“None of that. I’m a damn SEAL woman, you’re going to embarrass me.” In an effort to prove the point, Echo rolled over onto his good knee, balancing his weight and using his hands to propel upwards, while keeping pressure off the braced leg.

A move which might have failed if Janny hadn’t been right there, tucking herself up under his arm for support.
